Hold That Fat - North Carolina Restaurant Group Leads Industry with Healthy Choice
Andy’s Cheesesteaks Leads the Way With No Trans Fats
MOUNT OLIVE- October 9, 2006 - It’s a debate that’s heating up in the “Big Apple” and around the nation. Should restaurants serve foods with Trans Fats, which doctors and scientists say are bad for your health? The answer was simple for Andy’s Cheesesteaks and Cheeseburgers, a Mount Olive based restaurant group that led the way 3 years ago by eliminating the use of cooking oils with Trans Fatty Acids.
As reported in the New York Times and on NBC’s Today Show, the New York City Health Department is now urging all city restaurants to stop serving food with Trans Fats, chemically modified ingredients that health officials say increase the risk of heart disease. The request is the first of its kind by any large American city in the battle against Trans Fats, components of partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
According the New York Times, most scientists agree that trans fat is the nation’s most dangerous fat and recommend the use of alternatives. New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden said, “To help combat heart disease, the number one killer in New York City, we are asking restaurants to voluntarily make an oil change and remove artificial fats from their kitchens.”
Andy’s Cheesesteaks and Cheeseburgers was one of the first restaurant chains in the nation to recognize the need to do away with trans fat. In June of 2003, Andy’s made a healthy choice for the company and its customers by removing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils from fryers in its more than 100 stores and replaced it with a soy based product made in North Carolina called Whole Harvest. Whole Harvest is produced in Warsaw and is completely free of trans fat.
Andy’s President and founder Kenney Moore says, “The risks associated with partially hydrogenated oils have been known for years. As soon as we found an alternative, we knew it was a healthy decision for our customers and our company and wasted no time making the switch to Whole Harvest”. All of Andy’s restaurants proudly display notices informing customers that their foods are made trans fat free.
New York’s campaign comes on the heels of the Food and Drug Administration’s finding that there is no safe level of trans fat in a healthy diet. As a result of that finding, all companies must include trans fat levels in labeling information starting January 1st.
