What is a whole food plant-based diet?

A whole food plant-based diet focuses on eating minimally processed foods that come from plants. It includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, while avoiding animal products and highly processed foods. It focuses on maximizing nutrient-dense, plant-based ingredients to fuel and power your body.

What does SOS Free mean, and how would someone follow an SOS-Free diet?

An SOS-free diet is a dietary approach that eliminates Salt, Oil, and Sugar (hence, "SOS") from food. The idea behind the SOS-free diet is to promote better health by removing these three components, which are often seen as contributing to chronic diseases when consumed in excess.

Take a look at why the SOS-free diet is so beneficial to your health:

  • Salt (Sodium): Salt is excluded to help reduce the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and other health problems associated with excess sodium intake. People following an SOS-free diet avoid added salt and consume foods naturally low in sodium.
  • Oil: All oils are eliminated. The diet emphasizes obtaining healthy fats from whole plant foods like avocados, nuts, and seeds, rather than processed oils, which are calorie-dense and nutrient-poor.
  • Sugar: Added sugars, including refined sugars and artificial sweeteners, are cut out. The goal is to avoid spiking blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of metabolic disorders. Naturally occurring sugars in whole foods like fruits are generally acceptable.

The SOS-free diet is often associated with whole food plant-based (WFPB) eating and is advocated by some health professionals as a way to promote weight loss, reverse chronic diseases, and improve overall health. It aligns with the idea of eating minimally processed, nutrient-dense foods.
